For the transformation of the Binckhorst-area in the municipality of The Hague, DHV carried out an environmental appraisal which included a strategic environmental assessment and studies concerning the environmental influence of commercial operations in the area. The result was a report which recommends where and under which conditions certain activities can be realised or maintained.
The role of environmental issues in transformation
The municipality of The Hague is working on the transformation of the commercial zone “Nieuw Binckhorst”. In the next 20 years, this area will be developed into a combined living, working and recreational environment that displays a healthy mixture of functions.
The DHV environmental appraisal examined the new zoning master plan, in conjunction with a strategic environmental assessment of Nieuw Binckhorst. Two studies have also been completed which looks at the environmental influence of companies operating in this area.
Environmental appraisal and strategic environmental assessment
The Environmental appraisal and strategic environmental assessment includes issues such as the environmental impact of rail and road-traffic (noise, air-pollution and external safety) and soil-pollution.
In these documents the consequences or further designing, costs and spatial planning are addressed and the strategic environmental assessment sets out details and implications of the next stages in planning.
On October the first of 2009, The Hague City Council confirmed the development plan and corresponding strategic environmental assessment.
