After successful completion of the planning, design and construction supervision of the terminal rehabilitation at Sarajevo International Airport a century ago, NACO, Netherlands Airport Consultants B.V., has now been awarded the contract to develop the final design for the terminal expansion at Sarajevo International Airport.
After its rehabilitation, Sarajevo International Airport has been performing well. This was recognized on the 15th convention of ACI Europe, held in Munich in June 2005, where Sarajevo International Airport was proclaimed the best European airport in the category of airports up to 1 million annual passengers.
Passenger traffic at the airport has increased significantly in recent years, as a consequence of the growing economy and an emerging tourism sector. In 2008, passenger traffic was just over half a million at 510.396 passengers.
While the airport is still functioning effectively, capacity constraints are starting to emerge. Security and duty free facilities need to be expanded and most importantly, the terminal needs to be configured to prepare for Bosnia’s inception into the Schengen zone.
Given its previous experience with the Sarajevo International Airport and its international track-record, NACO is ideally placed to develop a design that meets these requirements.
The design of the Terminal Expansion will be funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction & Development (EBRD) through a dedicated contribution from the Netherlands Technical Cooperation Fund.
