The major part of the world population lives along rivers and in coastal and delta areas. The infrastructure and water systems in these areas provide important opportunities for economic development, transport and recreation. At the same time flooding is a threat to the environment and further economic growth. DHV has extensive experience in ports, waterways, flood protection and all related maritime infrastructure. St. Petersburg Flood Protection Barrier, Russia

The barrier in the Neva Bay protects St. Petersburg and its 5-million inhabitants against flooding. Construction of the barrier started in 1980, but the work was never finalized due to environmental issues. From 2003 to 2008 DHV and its partners executed the completion of the flood protection barrier. They were responsible for design, tendering and construction supervision. The flood protection barrier, with a length of 25km, is the most complex barrier in the world.Read more

Panama Canal Expansion, Panama

The Panama Canal is an important artery in intercontinental transport in central America. In order to be able to grow with the present and future water transport sector, the canal’s capacity must be enlarged. DHV, together with partners, has been contracted for the project management of the construction of a third set of locks with larger lock chambers. The project started in 2007 and is to be completed in 2014. Read more

Green ports

Global industrial development has lead to increased ports and waterways trade flows. At the same time, there is a distinct movement of people towards (new) urban centers located in deltas and coastal regions all over the world. These developments can cause heavy strain on the environment around port and waterfront areas. DHV’s green port concept actively tackles the challenges to create innovative solutions for these coastal hot-spots where people, environment, ports and industries meet. Read more
