Systems engineering

Systems Engineering refers to a structured methodology of systems development. The methodology is characterized by a life-cycle philosophy, a multidisciplinary approach and structured information management. Systems Engineering, moreover, implies: attention to stakeholders, top-down work and management of interfaces between technology and other disciplines in a project. DHV provides services in the field of Systems Engineering for clients from both the private and public sectors. These services focus on converting the abstract perspective of a project into practical applications and products.

Systems Engineering (SE) is a structured and explicit methodology for the development of systems (objects). By using SE, you and DHV together create a truly integrated solution. The principles we use are based on the SE methodology as articulated in the “SE GWW sector Guideline” and the international standard ISO 15288.

The DHV approach is characterized by the following aspects:

  1. life-cycle philosophy; the possibility of taking into consideration the following phases in each phase of a system, such as by considering management and maintenance of a road at the time of the design phase;
  2. multidisciplinary approach: Systems Engineering is based on the principle of “thinking from the whole system perspective” rather than thinking from the perspective of individual components. This results in an integrated view of system components. This could, for instance, apply in a case in which both installation and civil engineering know-how is required for an integrated design for a road link;
  3. structured information management; adequate information management in which information is properly structured and explicitly documented is a necessity in SE processes;
  4. attention to stakeholders; insight into who actually has an interest in the project is important for a good SE process. Subsequently one can reflect with the client and stakeholders on requirements, wishes and solutions and the manner in which choices are made. The result is solutions for which all stakeholders bear responsibility;
  5. top-down work: ever deeper iteration of requirements and design from the system level to the component and element level;
  6. interfaces between technology and other disciplines, such as risk management, configuration management and document management.
